loch tay boathouse

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

This boathouse on Loch Tay in central Scotland was created over a specially constructed cave which allows a boat to be driven in and tethered to the ceiling before an electric winch hoists it out of the water into mooring position. The living space above includes a kitchenette, shower room and a fold-away bed.

the capitol residence

Friday, July 4th, 2008

“The project includes 1688 sft of living space, one car garage, driveway, and green space on a small lot centered in Seattle’s Capitol Hill urban community. The house is clad in aluminum paneling, white and black, with Cedar accents. Extensive store-front windows facing the street add a voyeuristic element to the home, giving away intimate views of the master suite and living room floors. Exposed cedar beams on the ceiling and steel-supported stair treads can be seen as well. The stairwell is made of 6” thick Tiger Wood treads. Clerestory windows located near the ceiling line allow light to continuously move through the home.”

Didden Village

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Didden Village “The first realization in MVRDV’s hometown Rotteredam is a rooftop house extension. On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family. The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building.”

lilyfield house

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

lilyfield

“An addition to an original weatherboard house in an inner city area. The original house maintains it’s integrity as a larger worker’s cottage with narrow weatherboards and functional details. The new addition is a reinterpretation of the two storey cottage replacing the previous utilities ‘lean to’ with a new form which echoes the existing.

This new space incorporates a living area with a children’s loft above, study nook, kitchen and dining area. The living area and loft are connected by a void which forms the termination of the circulation spine extending from the exisiting corridor through to the new spaces.

The addition is clad in a wide vertical steel “weatherboard” more often used on commercial buildings but here viewed as an appropriate response to both historical and visual contexts.

Design decisions were driven by references to existing fabric, orientation, axis of movement and, importantly, the intersection of new and old forms.”
